Blizzard 2016

Newark was hit with more than two feet of snow. Please let us know about the City of Newark's response to the storm. Let us know what street you live on, what time it was plowed and whether it is passable now. We'll forward any complaints about streets not being plowed directly to administration of Mayor Ras Baraka. We'll compile this information so we know what the problems areas are for the next storm and work with the administration to better address these areas.

Newark did a horrible job this year of clearing the streets. It is not Monday evening. And no plow trucks in sight. No police in site at all. There are plenty of pile ups and unnecessary traffic complications. Police have been quick to give tickets but no one has helped to direct traffic or advocate for the community. Our children are still out of school. There are plenty of working class mothers and fathers who need to work and there is a lack of transportation and childcare available. At this point it all trickles down hill. it was already said that there will be no clean up until Tuesday!!! This is unacceptable. It has never been this horrible in regard to clean up.

This was the worst I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t even make it home last night on Ridge St. Had to go back to a friends house in Bergen county, which still received over 2 feet of snow and roads were passable by the afternoon. Barely made it through today. It’s now 7:05pm and it’s still not plowed. It’s a disaster area. Snow removal over the past years has decline dramatically. The streets used to be cleaned to the curbs now we would be lucky to see a plow. Terrible

500 block of Clifton Ave is not cleaned due to stuck CARS last night. And why did they show up at 10:30 pm? Not terribly accountable for public safety.

I live in north 4th st and 2ave and the streets are still covered in snow. However, there isn’t been any snow plows by. Also, the some of the sidewalks are covered in snow so kids can’t go to school like first avenue school.

There was no preparation, no proactive work to make sure residents would be able to get out if needed or have emergency personnel have access to residents homes. I personally have been stuck home, I live on Parkhurst by Goble and work for a utility company in Union and couldn’t make it. We tried calling all the snow removal numbers and no one answers them. My babysitter lives on Elm st and no access to her since Elm st is all covered and has stranded car. My street is finally a little manageable since myself and neighbors took it upon ourselves to plow out our street as best as we can. Without getting to my babysitter I can’t get to work either, so now I have to see how I make it to get my kids to babysitter tomorrow. By the looks of it Elm St and all surrounding streets will still be covered in snow like it’s been since Saturday. This is just unacceptable.

I live on Richards Street. No plow has been seen yet. I called the 973-877-9260 and was told that plows would be there around 5pm. No plows in sight. We have people on this block with heart problems, physical disabilities and pregnant women. If we can’t get out how can Emergency vehicle get in if there is an emergency. They will get stuck too. Mayor of Newark dropped the ball big time. Smh!

    Okay Councilman Ramos Jr.

Although you are not my councilman, but since you want to know “How was the City’s response to the 2016 blizzard?” It is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! As I write, nothing has been plowed, our streets are still filled with snow (Woodbine Avenue, Manor Drive, Mt. Vernon Place, Tuxedo Parkway, Normand Road…). My husband has to walk to Irvington/South Orange tonight because he cannot move his car from our driveway. Why? Because he risk getting stuck!!!

I have tweeted the Deputy Mayor and the Mayor, some 22 hours ago, still NOTHING!!!!!!

In the 29 years I have resided in Newark, this has never happened; and yes I get the magnitude of the storm, but what I don’t get is the lack of plows/equipment, given the fact that this was declared a “State of Emergency”, why haven’t the State assisted us; why haven’t the State cleared the “State-Run” schools, so that our children are not sitting at home; why are we still stuck at home? This is ridiculous. Are we supposed to be writing the State? Who the graham cracker are we supposed to be writing, because I am passed annoyed.

You need to develop a plan where cars cannot park on the streets so the streets can be plowed and the snow REMOVED. Allowing parking on the street is the main problem.

I lived in Newark all of my 37 yrs. I have never seen such neglect like this past weekend. I only work 2 mins from my home yet it took 30 min to get to work because the roads were so bad. Such a disappointment.

I live on N 9th st. Around 10pm last night the plows finally showed up BUT our street was never plowed or salted. They both stood at the intersect blocking the street while the lead truck driver got down for a snack and coffee. Left after 20min as I said before without plowing or putting salt down.

Parker Street between Bloomfield Avenue and Park Ave near Barringer High School has yet to be plowed. Seriously why do we as your constituents have to wait this long when this is a process that should’ve started since Saturday so that we didn’t get to this predicament. When will the neighborhood be cleaned?
I already lost a day of business I am not in the mood to lose another. Thank you.

Ridge st between Elwood and Delavan is still not plowed at Monday 4:30 pm. Residents are now in the street using shovels and their snow blower to remove the snow our selves.

Well in springdale neighbors worked togethet to clear our street since the city didnt do there job. Also the talk about main roads being cleared first lets not forget most if the main streets were cleared by essex county not the city of newark therefore the city has done nothing to help tax payers of newark. I truly believe that we really need to remember all that is happening when it comes to election time.”

I don’t have a complaint; I have a compliment. For the first time in as long as I can remember Emerson Place (between Dayton St & Frelinghuysen Ave) was plowed within 24-hours of the storm’s end. The plow came through at 1:00 AM on Monday morning and plowed from curb-to-curb wherever possible! Kudos to the team that made it possible!

Tuxedo parkway had 3 trucks “ride” through it Saturday morning. Nothing has happened since. It is a one way but the 2 streets you can take to get off of it have not been touched so everyone has been riding the wrong way in order to get out! And the street is so icy it should be called Tuxedo iceway. As of 4pm Monday still NOTHING!!!! I am dreading going home from work right now

My street hasnt been plowed at all. North 9th street is exactly th same as it was when the storm was over. We cant get out and no one can get in. My husband had to walk to a main street today to have a coworker pick him up to get to work because of how bad our street is. Very upset! What are our tax dollars being used for?

It’s is extremely discomforting to see that our city, the City of Newark, is taking so long to take care of it’s residents. Side streets are being overlooked and it’s causing Tax Payers accidents and distrust in our city’s administration. I live by the corner North 13 and Abington Avenue. Currently, our street’s conditions are terrible. No one has plowed our Street since the first portion of the storm. However, if you walk down 1 block, the difference is astonishing. The next block over is Bloomfield; their street is clean and cars are able to make their way with ease. This is not fair to us and our community.
