Charter School Growth

On May 12, the Newark City passed a resolution sponsored by Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. opposing a bill under consideration in the state Assembly that would restrict the growth of charter schools in the state.

The council passed the resolution opposing A-4351 by a vote of 7-2 with Council President Mildred Crump and South Ward Councilman John James voting no.

The bill, introduced by Assembly Education Committee chairman Patrick Diegnan (D-Middlesex) and Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-Essex), calls for a three-year moratorium on the expansion of existing charter schools throughout the state, including in Newark.

Charter schools are free public schools that are open to all students of a district and do not require entrance exams. Newark has 20 charter schools enrolling more than 11,000 students.
