Change in Police Policy

The City of Newark has issued a new policy directing police officers to refer victims of crimes, such as simple assault, criminal mischief and harassment to file complaints in municipal court, rather than compile an incident report themselves. Read more about it on nj.com and my statement on the issue.

Elder DV VICTIMS suffer unnecessarily with this Directive directing victims and their families to file complaint in court. Police can do WELLNESS CHECK and report what can provide for a RESTRAINING ORDER to be heard in court.

Are we asking seniors who have been assaulted and traumatized, to pull themselves together, hop on a bus, go to a police station and file a complaint? Really? What is the end game, save money or reduce the crime stats, shame on those who support this move. Either you drank the kool side or your blind

I too disagree with this policy change. Should the victim also go out and apprehend the criminal. I mean what’s next?

I have attended the 2nd precinct council meetings. This change is against public policy and against any reasonable manner of running a police department. The police have explained, repeatedly and in detail to members of the public that REPORTING CRIME directly to the police is essential for them to know where the problems are, to track the problems statistically, and to allocate police resources accordingly. What this change means is that the statistics will look much better in the future because so much less crime is reported. But of course the city is not actually safer. This is as bad as the Corey Booker administration and his police department not counting dead body cases as murders because “he may have been killed in Irvington and the body was dumped in Newark”.

This new policy is unacceptable….when you are getting assaulted are you going to ask the assailant to give you all the pertinent information so that you can take him/her to court. The same goes for anything else like harassment or criminal mischief…wake up and smell the coffee!!!! You might as well send the men in blue to the unemployment line and let us do all the work…

The Newark Police Department sadly are not there to truthfully protect anyone, they are basically there to collect a pay check and give tickets to hard working citizens, in order for the city to continue to get easy money when it wants. When they should be enforcing safety and protection of the elderly and other crime victims they are too busy enforcing a crosswalk on Broadway coming off 1-9. I was given a ticket for not stopping for a Pedestrian on Broadway, I never saw the pedestrian, as per the cops, he was an undercover cop trying to cross on the crosswalk and no one stopped for him. I never saw a crosswalk, there is no sign, no pole with a button to push, no standing sign on the street to stop cars, as is normal to have in other towns. The cops on Wednesday literally pulled 30 cars and ticketed everyone for not stopping for the undercover cop, I was delayed 30 minutes for my next job waiting for my ticket, since they had to write multiple tickets. They literally pulled everyone on the right lane to get the ticket. All the cops had to say was that unfortunately I didn’t stop on the crosswalk for an undercover cop as a pedestrian and that that particular spot has many hit and runs causing multiple deaths, since no one stops. Really???? so now all of the sudden the city decides to do something after many deaths have happened, how come its not in the news. The city and the Police Department are nothing but thieves stealing money from Newark citizens in a way of legal extortion. I work hard, I earn my money honestly, I go from Hospital to hospital, Nursing Home to Nursing home, providing medical care for clients of Essex, Hudson and Bergen County and it is someone like me who the Newark police Department decides to stop to commit their legal extortion, instead of going out there and stopping real criminals. When it comes down to doing what they are supposed to be doing by enforcing the law and providing safety, they are the first to break it. When they are really needed, they show up 2 or 3 hours later, they always let criminals go, they don not go after the real deal, they go after law abiding citizens. Shame on the city and the Police Department. I truthfully cannot wait until I leave the city of Newark. It will never change. Now I have to miss work to go to court and probably fight for not getting points on my license, something I have never had. I have to miss a day of work on my time to solve this issue because the city could care less about their citizens, they just want their money. I must look like a clown, because when the city asks for help, there I am supporting them and providing my services as a citizen and this is how the city pays back their citizens.

This policy on it’s face is ridiculous!!! Whoever came up with this policy an their advisors should be fired or ask to resign. So instead of coming up with real policies to reduce the crime rate they come up with this smoke screen an say it will help them focus more serious crime. Who in there right mind believes this (those who recommended this policy DON’T count)? So “To Protect and Serve” will now be ???? Yeah
