Change in Police Policy

The City of Newark has issued a new policy directing police officers to refer victims of crimes, such as simple assault, criminal mischief and harassment to file complaints in municipal court, rather than compile an incident report themselves. Read more about it on nj.com and my statement on the issue.

If you disagree with this policy change, please sign this petition.

I live and work in Newark. Most of us understand that the police department is understaffed and funding is always a perpetual issue. However, neither of these circumstances should result in the reduction of service or response by the police department. Serious crimes often start with minor incidents which can escalate quickly. It’s better to see an active, visible police force dealing with both quality of life issues AND criminal activity like drugs, gangs, etc. I’ve experienced first hand waiting hours on end for police response after repeated calls and disingenuous apologies issued for the slow or non-existent response. NPD often complains that residents don’t call for issues, but when they do the lack of expedient response makes residents wonder why they even bothered to call. It seems as if we are given a non-choice here: either wait hours on end for an officer to take a report or take half a day to go downtown to file a report with the court in person.

I would like to know if our mayor sighned off on this. If so than that makes him a liar. Because he promised us out safety was priority. I’m not understanding this..and I’m saddened that our seniors will suffer if this is not stopped.

This is why crime is so overlooked in Newark, I had an incident and that is exactly what happened..we need to stand for justice..what the purpose for having police and our tax money paying them…I’m here if you need me..
