Today in Newark, tens of thousands of residents have gained access to healthcare thanks to the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid Expansion. But health insurance can only be effective if it’s being put to proper use.

Newark residents should be aware of a new initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to make sure everyone who has health insurance knows how to use it.

The Coverage 2 Care initiative seeks to connect people to the care they need, teach them how to understand their benefits and their bills and give them the tools to make healthier decisions for a healthier life.  

In Newark this means a wide variety of partners including community health centers, faith based organizations, enrollment assisters, regional teams, and community advocates are working to engage new consumers on using preventive services for health and wellness, workshops on health literacy, and tips on using their new coverage.

June is Men’s Health Month, and it’s a perfect opportunity for newly insured men to learn how to avoid preventable health problems and to get checked for early detection and treatment of disease.

In addition to helping you understand your new plan, and finding a provider, these resources will also offer options for making healthier lifestyle decisions.

Simple pointers such as making time for physical activity, healthy eating, relaxation, and sleep will empower you to take an active role in your health, before you even need to use your new health plan.

If you still don’t have coverage and need it, Open Enrollment will begin again in the fall, but consumers undergoing a life changing event, such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child – are eligible for enrollment year round, and Medicaid enrollment is always open.

Staying healthy increases the chances you’ll be there for your family and friends for many years to come.

In Newark we offer a great variety of health and recreational services and now is the perfect time to take advantage of them.

Use your health coverage when you are sick and when you are well, to help you live a long, healthy life. While coverage is important, there’s no substitute for living a healthy lifestyle.
